Birds
Today at Otmoor
In the early spring sunshine, Otmoor has looked at its best today. The birds seemed to have responded too, with a lot of activity across the reserve.
The majority of birds are still present on Big Otmoor, with 500 golden plover being accompanied by approximatly 15 dunlin and a single ruff. Lapwing, although now spread across the whole reserve, are still forming some fair sized flocks on Big Omtoor, of up to 300 birds. This field still holds some interesting ducks, including some very smart drake pintail.
3000 starlings have been flocking over the reserve, putting on some fantastic displays (more typical of the winter roost) when flushed by a peregrine.
The reserve has seen a big influx of snipe over the last few days, with over 50 birds being found on Greenaways alone. A solitary jack snipe was seen on Flood field, as was a green sandpiper.
All in all a very good way to start the season. It can't be too long now until we hear the first chiffchaff starting to sing!
All the best
