Siberian Chiffchaff?, Abingdon SF 12th Feb

The tristis/abietinus bird was still present the sewage works today. I didn't hear it call but the pics below give an impression of how it variously appeared in the field. Generally grey-brown lacking any green/yellow except for yellow underwing covs/axillaries and greenish fringes to the remiges, tail and greater coverts. Neat super, dark bill and legs, nice wingbar and a light brown wash to the ear coverts.

- Grimsbury Reservoir: 29th December
Grimsbury Reservoir 2 Chiffchaff: One typical collybita and one that is 'different', both seen well together to make comparisons of plumage and call. The 'different' bird was paler and greyer, almost white below and grey-brown above, none...

- Cuddesdon: 1st March
Presumed 1st winter male Merlin (aged on the basis of the brown barred juvenile tail and flight feathers, but adult type blue-grey uppertail coverts, mantle, scapulars and upper wing coverts). A local first!  Birdless Cuddesdon Blog....

- East Hendred 18th January
A good candidate for 1st-winter Rough-legged Buzzard seen very briefly this afternoon at 14:30 (from car), perched in wet field at west end of East Hendred, north of A417. Around 15-20m from the road and therefore offering decent naked eye views, showed...

- Great Grey Shrike At Little Stoke
I've just received a photo of a Great Grey Shrike taken on Thursday 9th Feb at Little Stoke, near Goring South Oxon. It was near an area where hedge laying was taking place. Also, yesterday, at least 10 Chichaffs at Abingdon sewage works including...

- Gulls At Appleford 30/11/11
This is the Iceland Gull found by Tom Wickens this morning. These poor video grabs were obtained mid afternoon. The general blotchy look to the scapulars, the sharply defined dark on the bill with a fine pale tip (inset middle pic), the pale iris...
