Farmoor at Dusk


Light no good for gull roost but a Great Northern Diver was perfectly silloueted at the edge of the thousands of Larids. At least 2300 Jackdaws coming mainly from Wytham direction to roost in the woodland south of the Res. One buzzard flying NE into wind, over the cold waters of F1 towards Wytham and later 2 Buzzard circling together surprisingly late in the fast advancing gloom, overhead of the departing Jackdaw flocks.




- Great Grey Shrike
Monday 21st Jan, Cholsey Marsh. The Great Grey Shrike was around the Cholsey Marsh area, south of Ferry Lane from 4pm till dusk. Ranging both sides of the river but seemed to be interested in the Corn Buntings coming in to roost in the reeds on the Cholsey...

- Jackdaw And Lapwing
1200 Jackdaw minimum seen heading for roost and c48 Lapwing circling very low over F2 towards dusk. Gull roost too distant to distinguish the mega tonight - but (fingers crossed) watch this space......

- Little Gull Joins Snow Bunt And Gg Shrike
Snow Bunting present F2 side of causeway late afternoon, with 8 female and 1 male Goldeneye on F1. Great Grey Shrike reported c 3.15pm as having been "perched in tree in middle of Shrike Meadow for a long time". "Near the split in paths by felled trees"....

- Goshawk Puts On Great Display Over Wytham
Turned up at Farmoor 11.10 with a force 6 westerly blowing. Went to causeway, scanned Wytham, then Farmoor 1. Then scanned Wytham again and everthing was up at 11:25. At least one Goshawk, a couple of Buzzard, with Male sparrowhawk and Carrion crows showing...

- Starlings Off Appleford Road Sunday 14th November
Huge number of Starling coming into evening roost in the reed bed 500m west of Appleford Station. A more-or-less constant stream of flocks comprising 100+ individuals coming from the west (Sutton Courtenay direction). Best estimate of numbers- c.14,500....
