Colour ringed Cormorants at Farmoor

Following recent sightings of colour ringed birds on the res i have had the following info back from the very helpful Grampian Ringing Group.

Bird 1. "HXY". This chick was ringed at the Inverbervie colony on 27 June 2010 and was present on F1 on September 5th 2011.

Bird 2. "PAY". This chick was ringed at the Whinneyfold colony on 17 June 2010 and was present on F1 on April 25th 2011.

To give some idea of the distance travelled, Inverbervie is about 25 miles south of Aberdeen, and approx 480 miles north of Farmoor.

Farmoor has a history of cormorants from NE Scotland, in December 2005 a 6 month old bird was found dead, and in January this year another 6 month old bird was found dead. Thankfully the latest 2 birds have made it through their first winter and looked in good condition.

If you see any cormorants that are ringed the following info is useful:

1. colour of darvic ring and which leg it is on
2. colour of the lettering on the darvic ring and the sequence of letters
3. presence or otherwise of a ring on the other leg and if possible any inscription
4. time, date, location.

Rather than post the chaps email address on here, if you want it please send me a message and i will forward you his details. Alternatively you could pass any detail onto Matt Prior the Conservation, Access and Recreation manager for Thames Water.

Maybe not as exciting as a White Winged Black Tern but nontheless very interesting and any sightings will add to the knowledge and understanding of this species.
regards
Dave
